Understanding Your Grade Point Average (GPA)

A Grade Point Average (GPA) is a standardized number representing the average value of your final accumulated grades. In the United States, the most common system is the 4.0 Scale, where an 'A' corresponds to 4.0 points and an 'F' corresponds to 0.0.

How Credit Hours Impact Your Score

GPA is a "weighted" average. This means a 4-credit science lab affects your GPA more significantly than a 1-credit seminar. To calculate your GPA manually, you multiply the points for each grade by the number of credit hours for that course, sum those values (Total Quality Points), and divide by the total number of credit hours attempted.

The Formula

$GPA = \frac{\sum (GradePoints \times Credits)}{\sum Credits}$

Unweighted vs. Weighted GPA

While our calculator uses the standard 4.0 unweighted scale, some high schools use a **Weighted GPA**. In a weighted system, advanced placement (AP) or Honors courses are given extra points (e.g., an 'A' might be worth 5.0). This is intended to reward students for taking more challenging coursework.

Note: Grading scales can vary by institution. Please check your specific school's handbook for the most accurate point values.
